Salt (Year 4)
We have been learning about Forces in Science and have done some exciting investigations. One of our favourites was looking at friction on surfaces to see how our cars move along. We had a brief from a toy company to find our on which surfaces toy cars moved the slowest and on which they moved the quickest. We investigated using toy cars and different surfaces, such as cardboard, cotton wadding and bubble wrap, to see how far the cars went from the bottom of the ramp.
Our trip to the Dale Countryside Museum
We had a fantastic time on our trip to the Dales Countryside Museum. We took part in lots of exciting activities. We looked at real Roman artifacts, we were history detectives, explored the museum and created out own mosaics.
The staff at the museum were extremely proud of the children and they said they were very enthusiastic and work extremely hard. A fabulous day!
This half term in LKS2 we are reading Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. Our Creative Curriculum topic is entitled Scrumdiddlyumptious and is based around something we all love lots – food! We did observational drawings of real pieces of fruit using sketch pencils and skills. We were also then lucky enough to taste different types of chocolate and comment on the tastes and textures we encountered. Using Maths skills, we then collected data from our class to find our which the favourite chocolate was. We compiled bar graphs and pictograms with our findings. It was really fun because we had to taste the chocolate blind – with our eyes shut! All of them were lovely but our least favourite was the dark chocolate.
In English we watched the trailer for the film of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and made character profiles for the children. We are planning to write a newspaper report about the day the five children visited Mr Wonka’s factory.
In Maths we are concentrating on learning our times tables up to 12 x 12. We play lots of games to help and enjoy chanting them together in class. We are learning formal written methods for all four operations and have been enjoying learning how to reason and problem solve using the operations too.
In Salt Class, we tried different types of smoothies. We evaluated what we liked about each one, what we would change and we gave each smoothie a rating out of 10. We are going to be planning and making our own fruit smoothie and putting together a marketing campaign for our own fruit smoothie. It will be called the ‘Fruit Apprentice!’
The Chocolate Factory!
In Salt class we have been reading Horrid Henry Tricks the Tooth Fairy. This is to coincide with our Creative Curriculum Topic – Burps, Bottoms and Bile. The children have enjoyed our read and respond activities, which have involved a role on the wall for Henry. We have realised what a negative and horrid boy he really is! We also enjoyed getting into character and hot seating Henry in order to help with our writing of a diary entry. Having role played some scenes from the story, the children are beginning to deepen their understanding of studying texts and analysing characters.
We have been studying teeth for our topic and how to look after them. We have started a tooth diary for the half term where we are brushing our teeth daily and chewing plaque disclosing tablets once a week to notice the effects of extra brushing. Having all our mouths turn purple has been frightful yet funny!
